Total Health

Healthy Girl Over the past 10 years medical research has been finding that your oral health has a direct bearing on your overall health.  A few years ago an article appeared distributed by the Associated Press titled “Floss or Die!”  While a little dramatic, the point is very important.

Recent research has shown that there is a direct correlation between gum disease and heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, the major causes of death in America.  The culprit is the bacteria which causes gum disease called Porphyromonas gingivallis.  This bacteria can enter the bloodstream, adhere to other cells and start a chain reaction which can cause inflammation, blood clots and encourage the build up of plaque.

To lessen or even avoid the possible problems and diseases associated with gum disease make sure your lifestyle includes:

  • Good oral hygiene and care at home
  • Brush at least twice a day, including the tongue and roof of your mouth.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • Visit us every six months for a thorough cleaning and exam so we can catch gum disease early.  Treatment is very effective.
  • Pay attention to the symptoms of gum disease.

The point is that your mouth is the gateway to your body. Let’s do all we can to keep our mouths, our teeth and our smiles clean and healthy so we can look forward to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
